Flexible Silicone Solutions for the Rail Industry
Public transport connects people across the world and with an increasing demand for underground, light rail, and more recently high speed rail such as HS2, France's TGV and China's HSR systems, rail transportation has grown to become one of the most important and busiest modes of transport especially in densely populated areas.
This high demand calls for high performance silicone materials to withstand intensive use, whilst at the same time still providing the health and safety standards needed to keep passengers welfare at the highest level.
Silicone Engineering’s specialised rail materials have been formulated and tested to and meet the highest standards associated with the rail industry such as EN 45545-2, UL94-V0, BS 6853 Category 1 and NF F-16-101 Cat F0, which is why we are experts in silicone for rail applications such as sealing, gaskets and acoustic designs and solutions.
Why choose silicone rubber for rail applications?
It is vital that the correct silicone materials are selected by engineers and designers to allow for ultimate efficiency at high speeds. Our silicone rubber is available in both sponge/foam and solid grades allowing for a wide choice in materials to suit rail applications.
UL94V-0 Silicone Sponge/Foam
Silicone Sponge - EN45545-2
kSil™V-0 sponge is specially formulated to provide low smoke and low toxicity properties compliant with EN 45545-2. Find out more about kSil™V-0 silicone sponge which ensures safety within rail carriages in the event of a fire.
High Temperature Resistance
All our silicone rubber grades excel at extreme temperatures of -60°C up to +230°C (250°C intermittently) which provides excellent sealing properties for applications that generate high heat such as HVAC and LED lighting systems within rail carriages.
Silicone has excellent environmental resistance withstanding weathering such as Ozone, UV, rain and frost meaning outdoor applications such as electrical enclosures and lighting systems are kept dry without the risk of ingress from water and dust. Our silicone can achieve IP ratings of IP66.
Low Compression Set
kSil™V-0 silicone sponge has low compression set of < 1%, which provides excellent sealing performance over a longer life cycle and with consistent usage under pressure.
Rail Applications for Silicone Products
Silicone lends itself to being used in a number of applications within the rail industry such as;
Interior Rail applications
- HVAC Gaskets
- Lighting Seals
- Display Gaskets
- Interior Door Seals
- Vibration Dampening
Exterior Rail Applications
- Exterior door seals
- Exterior lighting gaskets
- Window Seals
Silicone rubber's flexibility, strength and durability is ideally placed in train locomotives and carriages along with other mass transit sectors such as marine vessels, public transportation and heavy goods vehicles.
Silicone also helps to maintain the structural integrity of a vehicle, helping to ensure all components are secure and resist corrosion from temperature fluctuations, moisture, salt and fuel.
