kSil™ and expanSil™ silicone sponge has been specially formulated to provide excellent performance under common stresses of HVAC units, especially within Mass Transit applications. Common HVAC applications are:

Silicone sponge is used in a number of applications within HVAC systems. Due to its excellent compression set, it is commonly used as seals and gaskets providing protection from water and dust ingress.

Silicone sponge is also used as an insulator both thermally and acoustically. Thermally, silicone sponge is the ideal material to insulate an application due to its closed cell structure giving it excellent insulating properties. This means it can be applied as gap fillers and within cavities within the HVAC unit. Acoustically, kSil V-0 can dampen noise generated from the HVAC fans or the electric motors. For HVAC units within rail carriages, buses or other mass transit vehicles, silicone sponge dampens vibrations and rattles caused by movement on road or track.

In today’s elastomer market, the range of rubbers available to lighting engineers, designers and buyers is extensive. So much so, that when analysing the list of rubber properties, it is very easy to get lost in a maze of grades, forms, specifications, thickness’s and hardness’s.

Failure to choose the correct sealing material often leads to failure in application. This is commonly caused by water, moisture or dust ingress within electrical enclosures causing downtime and repair costs. Therefore it is vital to analyse and chose the correct materials to ensure failure is prevented.

When to Choose Silicone Rubber?

Silicone rubber excels at high temperatures and provides excellent sealing properties for LED lighting systems and electrical enclosures that are exposed to outdoor conditions.

Due to silicones’ extreme temperature resistance, chemical stability and low compression set, it is the material of choice in many LED lighting applications as it performs comfortably with high heat generated from the diodes. Food Processing

The food processing industry calls for tighter regulations and specifications in order to maintain a high level of health and safety. suraSil™DS dairy tubing has been specially formulated to provide strong wall structure and is tested to withstand the daily wear and tear of dairy parlours.

Flexibility
suraSil™DS dairy tubing stays flexible up to -60°C ensuring no cracking or splitting occurs during cold winter temperatures.

Hygiene
suraSil™DS dairy tubing has been specially designed with an ultra-smooth inner surface to reduce the risk of particle build up from the milk. The smooth inner surface of the tube increases the efficiency of daily hygiene cleaning, reducing the risk of harmful bacteria building up.

Vending Tubing

Vending machines serving hot drinks such as tea and coffee require not only the health and safety benefits of silicone but also its physical properties to withstand high temperatures and high levels of usage. Silicone Engineering’s suraSil™ tubing is commonly used as delivery tubes to transport the hot beverage from the machine to the cup. The smooth inner surface of the tubing helps reduce the buildup of residue left by the beverage, and also makes cleaning much more efficient.

As Silicone Engineering’s vending tubing is compliant with FDA, BfR and WRAS approvals, suraSil™ is ideal to be used in vending machine applications. Our silicone ensures no taste contamination and offers the durability to withstand constant use. The suraSil™ range is available in A-scale shore hardness of 30 to 80 for extrusions.

Breweries

With over 25 years’ experience, Silicone Engineering is now able to provide brewery manufacturers a product that is durable, translucent and affordable. Our range of silicone tubing has a low bursting pressure, which means that it can be used for brewery hoses / gaskets / process valves. Whilst many brewery manufacturers may still prefer to use copper pipes when brewing their beer, other mainstream manufacturers have identified silicone tubing as easy to install, maintain and replace. The tubing is translucent, making the flow of liquid and air bubbles visible. If you’re looking for the best grade tubing to use for brewing, use silicone.

Accreditations

Silicone Engineering solid GP products are fully compliant with the requirements of the U.S Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the German BfR.

Products have also been tested and approved by the Water Regulations Advisory Scheme (WRAS). This means that all our general purpose (GP) products can be used with drinking water up to 85°C.

Silicone Engineering’s fully FDA approved silicone sponge sheeting is the ideal material for the food, beverage and pharmaceutical industry.

Tested and fully approved by the Food and Drug Administration for the full list of ingredients within the sponge formula, the silicone sponge can be used with complete safety in food applications, whether the food be dry, aqueous or fatty.

FDA silicone sponge rubber has a variety of applications which can be applied in the following sectors;

The new material has been independently tested by Toxikon to analyse the total extractable substances, and proven to meet all criteria for extractables required by FDA 21 CFR 177.2600.

The composition of this product has also been positively assessed according to German BfR recommendation XV on silicone for food contact (BfR Empfehlungen XV zu Silicone).

Food Safe

Our food grade silicone sponge can be applied in a number of forms, most commonly as gaskets and seals to provide excellent sealing properties in machinery or units due to its exceptional compression set (5%) and high elongation 500% to 600%. With its extremely low water absorption properties, water, dust and dirt ingress is prevented from entering the machinery and more importantly the product.

All known FDA sponge products currently on the market, only state ‘compliance to’ FDA standards such as the extraction requirement. This does not mean the product is fully FDA compliant. Silicone Engineering has developed a silicone sponge that can be officially called FDA approved. The sponge rubber is prepared using only ingredients that are permitted for use by FDA 21 CFR 177.2600.

Along with full FDA approval, silicone’s high temperature resistance makes it a material of choice when high heat is being applied to food and beverage processes. With a standard temperature range from 230°C to -60°C, silicone can be applied in extreme environments whilst maintaining its high performance sealing properties.

In addition to our FDA silicone sponge, our solid silicone is fully compliant with FDA regulation 21CFR177.2600, EC1935/2004 as well as being WRAS approved (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme) for contact with drinking water.

Discover where silicone rubber is used in the Renewable Energy Sector

Silicone is widely used in the energy sector. Due to its inherently unique properties, especially thermal and chemical stability within a wide temperature range, silicone lends itself to high performance in high powered, outdoor environments. Also being Ozone and UV resistant, it is the ideal material to withstand environmental elements.

Wind Energy

In the case of wind-generated energy, silicone’s outstanding weathering properties offer superb protection for turbines, which are exposed to extreme environmental conditions. Silicone is generally used as seals and gaskets in wind turbine structures to provide excellent protection from the weathering elements whilst at the same time ensuring low water and dust ingress, which could potentially cause failure. With silicone’s extreme temperature range (-60°C to +230°C) the material will not degrade with fluctuations in high and low temperatures unlike more conventional rubbers.

Solar Energy

Silicone rubber is also used in the manufacturing of solar panels as vacuum membrane sheets. The vacuum membrane sheets provide high elasticity under vacuum where increased pressure is used to bond the solar cells together. In this process the most important property of silicone is its elongation, tear strength and lifespan. kSil™VAC has been tested and proven to clearly outperform the durability of organic polymers. kSil™VAC vacuum sheeting is available in sheets and rolls up to 1800mm wide.

Silicone rubber is helping to shape the designs of today’s modern buildings. From intricate silicone profiles and sections which are fitted to glass, steel and plastics, silicone has many uses in the construction industry.

Silicone materials are widely used in vibration management of buildings. Silicone acts to absorb vibration, stresses and movement in buildings, especially taller structures that are prone to slight movement from wind or ground vibrations.
