How does silicone rubber improve efficiency in Oil & Gas sector?

Well known for its extreme temperature and environmental resistance, silicone rubber lends itself to oil and gas pipeline construction. Silicone Engineering manufacture and supply kSil™ sheeting, which can go up to +270°C and as low as -60°C (+518°F to -76°F). With such stability at a wide range of temperatures silicone can be used in the construction of pipelines running through extremely cold environments such as Russia, Scandinavia and Canada to hotter environments such as the Middle East and Africa. With its inert properties and environmental resistance to UV and Ozone, lifespan is increased and more importantly risk of failure decreases significantly.

Pipeline support gaskets and thermal insulation are the two common applications of both kSil™ solid sheeting and kSil™ closed cell sponge sheeting. Solid support gaskets sit neatly within the pipeline support brackets spaced evenly along the path of the pipeline. The silicone gaskets provide a fixed cushion between the metal support bracket and the pipeline to avoid metal on metal contact. This reduces the risk of damage should the pipeline move. The gasket also acts to reduce vibration from the pipeline which again prevents damage to the pipe.  

Although silicone can withstand high heat, it also has excellent thermal insulation properties. Used to insulate pipelines, silicone sponge ensures controlled temperatures are maintained when running through cold environments.

With silicone's extreme temperature resistance and excellent environmental resistance, the material is perfectly placed to withstand the high performance required in heavy industrial applications. With pipelines also being exposed to ranging temperature extremes both hot and cold, silicone remains stable from 230°C to -60°C with a high temperature grade being available that can withstand temperatures up to 270°C. 

As well as producing specialty materials, Silicone Engineering has a wide range of generic grades that can be be extruded as profiles and sections for seals and fabricated gaskets.
