Earlier this year, an exterior lighting company known for providing lighting solutions to some of the world’s most iconic locations approached Silicone Engineering for assistance in developing a silicone gasket for a new floodlighting unit. Their goal was to create reliable lighting for large venues and arenas, where lighting performance and durability are critical.

The Opportunity and Challenge:

The challenge presented to us was to design a silicone seal that could achieve an IP66 rating, ensuring complete protection against water ingress in demanding outdoor environments. The silicone gasket had to withstand harsh weather conditions, including heavy rain and high winds, while maintaining a strong seal to protect the sensitive components of the floodlight unit.

Our task was to ensure that the gasket provided exceptional sealing performance, enabling the lighting company to confidently offer their new floodlighting solution to customers with high standards for performance and durability.

The Solution: kSil® GP 200

After initial discussions, our Business Development Manager visited the company to gain a clear understanding of the project requirements and offer tailored advice. The company then provided a technical drawing of the seal, with a few key considerations:

  1. Ease of Replacement: The seal needed to be easily replaceable to allow for maintenance through an accessible hatch within the lighting unit.
  2. Precision Cutting: The seal required waterjet cutting to ensure precise, clean edges when manufactured from silicone sheet material.

Following these discussions, our team recommended kSil® GP 200, a high-performance silicone material known for its excellent durability, water resistance, and suitability for outdoor applications. A trial order was placed, and after rigorous testing, the gasket performed flawlessly in the floodlight unit, meeting the IP66 standard for protection against water and environmental hazards.

Results and Conclusion:

The successful trial led to the part going into full production, and the company was thrilled with the performance of the gasket. Our silicone solution enabled the customer to launch their floodlighting unit with confidence, ensuring reliable protection and durability in some of the world’s most renowned outdoor venues.
