The Opportunity & Challenge

With the UK government set to bury up to 5 million tonnes of nuclear waste in the next decade, there is a growing demand for highly durable, long-lasting sealing solutions that can operate reliably in some of the harshest environments imaginable.

Across the UK’s 17 licensed nuclear waste disposal sites, secure containment is critical. Each storage unit must safely house hazardous materials for decades, if not centuries, without compromise.

A leading UK manufacturer in the nuclear sector approached Silicone Engineering for support in developing a specialised gasket system for a new line of nuclear waste containers. These containers, featuring a robust steel lid and outer casing are designed to be buried deep underground in concrete-shielded storage vaults. The sealing material needed to deliver long-term performance, withstand elevated temperatures, and maintain integrity despite extreme environmental and mechanical stresses.

Material Solution: Custom Formulated Closed Cell Silicone Sponge

Silicone Engineering developed and supplied custom formulated, closed cell silicone sponge gaskets, precision-cut to meet the customer’s drawing and specification requirements.

Designed for use in critical sealing applications, this silicone sponge delivers exceptional performance where standard materials may degrade or fail.

Key Benefits:

  • Low Compression Set: Maintains sealing force over long periods, reducing the risk of leakage or degradation.
  • Thermal Resistance: Suitable for high-temperature applications with operating ranges up to +230°C.
  • Environmental Sealing: Provides resistance to water, ozone, UV, and weathering, essential for underground repositories.
  • Long Service Life: Outperforms many organic elastomers in demanding conditions.

Installed between the steel lid and container body, the silicone sponge acts as a crucial sealing barrier, protecting against moisture ingress and gas release over the long storage life of the waste units.

Results & Outcome

The container system is currently being implemented across approved sites in the UK. Silicone sponge gaskets play a vital role in the final sealing mechanism. These solutions directly enhance the safety, compliance, and long-term reliability of the country’s nuclear waste strategy.

With proven experience in supplying specialised silicones to critical sectors such as nuclear, aerospace, and defence, Silicone Engineering continues to support complex containment projects where performance is crucial.
